This post will suit someone with a strong enforcement background who is confident managing complex cases, leading investigations, and providing authoritative advice on environmental legislation and prosecution procedures.

Key Responsibilities

The role will include (although is not limited to):

  • Investigating and enforcing against environmental crime, including fly‑tipping, waste offences, pollution (air, land and water), and unauthorised encampments
  • Leading on complex enforcement cases with minimal supervision, including evidence gathering, PACE interviews, issuing notices, fixed penalties and preparing prosecution files

  • Team leadership including allocation of work, complex complaints, FOIs, councillor enquiries and performance reporting
  • Working closely with partner agencies such as Police, Environment Agency, DEFRA, KCC and other local authorities

There will also be opportunities to develop new skills and experience in investigating statutory nuisances and work within specialist areas such as Air Quality, Private Drinking Water, Planning Applications and Contaminated Land, depending on experience and service need.

About You

You will already be working in a relevant enforcement or environmental role and will be able to demonstrate:

  • At least 2 years’ experience in a similar environmental enforcement‑based role
  • Experience of investigating environmental crime cases, including fly‑tipping
  • Experience of dealing with unauthorised encampments and the eviction process
  • Experience of taking formal enforcement action, including PACE interviews, evidence gathering and preparing cases for legal
  • Strong report‑writing skills and attention to detail
  • Confident communication skills and the ability to manage challenging situations
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise workloads and meet deadlines
  • A professional, customer‑focused approach

Above all else, you will be leading a very successful, supportive and passionate team. So, if you are excited about the opportunity to get out in the district and make a difference, promote the successes of the team, whilst enjoying a challenge and motivated by results, then we want to hear from you.

The 37 hours will be worked on a Monday to Friday basis per week. Whilst most of the work will be from 8.30am to 5pm daily, there may be times that you are required to work outside of these hours, e.g. for targeted operations.

Whilst we have a hybrid working approach, as an Environmental Crime Officer you will be providing a frontline service, with an expectation that you will work from the Civic Centre in Folkestone throughout the week, with the occasional opportunity to work from home.
